Latest health news …. sitting is the new smoking!  You must have heard it by now?  I started with little notes on my PC at work …  Get up and MOVE!  That didn’t work so well.  Not sure about most of you, but when I get engrossed in my work, I totally forget to move and hours go by at my keyboard.  Next I tried a home made stand-up desk. I unscrewed the wheels off my filing cabinet, took out the drawers and placed them sideways on top of my desk, then placed my monitor on top and my keyboard ergonomically placed at a 90 degree angle on top of the drawer.  Viola!  My colleagues think I’m crazy but I definitely feel more energized and it has virtually dissolved by hunching painful neck and shoulder problems.  But alas …  although it definitely takes care of the sitting part, according to numerous studies,  standing all day isn’t the best either. Damage to knees, back and a higher incidence of varicose veins and thrombosis!  My sciatic pain started flaring up and after a silly decision to stand all day in heels (my favourite $200 GEOX) I was diagnosed with bursitis of my cuneiform bone (top of your foot)!  The truth of the matter is we need a bit of sitting, a bit of standing and a BITFIT!

My Boomer Consumer rating on the Gamin vivosmartthumb-up-for-2012-copy

This was another of my great Christmas gifts from my family.  It not only tracks things like calories burned, heart rate and the number of steps taken, but it tells time and “time to move”!

Research shows that prolonged periods of inactivity, like sitting, or standing, decreases your body’s production of fat-burning enzymes. That effect can be reversed with frequent, short walk breaks.

You might lose track of time but vívosmart remembers. After 1 hour of inactivity, vívosmart vibrates to let you know that it’s time to move. Walk just a couple of minutes to reset the timer.

The vivosmart also pairs up with your mobile phone and alerts you of emails and texts.  The alerts are small vibrations but honestly, they scare the heck out of me!  I personally did not pair my mobile device because I really don’t want to be alerted about every message … but that is a totally personal choice.

There is also all kinds of on-line features to challenge yourself and I admit, I secretly cheer to myself every time I reach my goal of steps for the day!

Ooops!  Gotta go, just got a message on my vivosmart …. MOVE!
